Property Owners Can Self-Assess For Sidewalks

If a street or a neighborhood without sidewalks in Anderson Township would like to have them built, now there is a process available to help property owners do just that.

While the Anderson Trails Plan guides the township’s construction of new sidewalks, Anderson Township Trustees recently approved a sidewalk assessment policy that allows property owners to construct sidewalks in neighborhoods or areas that aren’t part of the plan.

The new assessment policy will enable property owners to band together to work with the township on the project, with an assessment period up to 10 years for construction payment. The township would cover the cost of construction up front, install the sidewalks and then recoup the monies through the assessment period.

Anderson Township has set up a series of action steps for groups wishing to begin the process. One hundred percent of the affected owners would need to be in agreement regarding the sidewalks and joint owners of property must both agree to abide by the assessment process.

This process does not impact the township’s ongoing program of repairing and replacing existing sidewalks.
