Anderson Township’s annual Shredding and Recycling Days event will be hosted as usual this May, but will take a hiatus in 2018. This year’s event, set for Friday, May 12 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Saturday, May 13 (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at the Anderson Township Operations Center, allows township residents to recycle a variety of unneeded items, plus shred sensitive documents for free.
Richard Shelley, director of Public Works, noted the township has decided to host the shredding and recycling days event this year, but suspend it in 2018 for several reasons. “Most items we take can be either thrown away or recycled through regular trash pickup or curbside service, or other locations will take these items for a small fee for recycling,” he said.
Additionally, Shelley noted that participation in the recycling and shredding event had fallen in recent years, while costs have risen. “We are trying to be good stewards of our tax dollars,” he noted. “The whole event needs to be reviewed since participation has declined by 50 percent or more since its inception.
“While I understand that some look forward to this event, we need to prove that is worth the money and the effort that is put forth, and not something that we do because we did it the year before,” Shelley said.
For 2017, residents may drop off unwanted items at the Anderson Operations Center (7954 Beechmont Ave.) behind the Beechmont Fire Station. Please note, no commercial vehicles are permitted. Proof of Anderson residency is required. TV sets are not longer accepted. As a reminder, oil-based paint is accepted but latex paint will not be accepted because it can be dried up and put in your curbside garbage pickup.
Residents also may bring sensitive documents for shredding. Please remove all paper clips, binders, and binder clips on items that will be shredded. The only thing that can be attached to the paper is a staple.
Residents may want to note that due to time constraints on Saturday, once the two shredding trucks are full, the township will not take any more papers to be shredded. Please plan accordingly or click here to watch a video of the event.
