Invasive Callery pear tree now in bloom

Did you know? The Callery pear, although it is blooming beautifully now, is now invasive. 

This white flowering tree is outcompeting even invasive bush honeysuckle in many places. This tough species, a very popular urban tree in the Midwest, is threatening ecosystems with its invasive tendencies. It can thrive in the most limited environment and will displace native species. Also, it is fast-growing, but produces weak limbs, causing problems 15-20 years down the road when branches start falling and creating issues. 

Anderson Township’s Street Tree Committee recommends avoiding these trees. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry has compiled a helpful fact sheet about the pear tree, which may be viewed by clicking below.
