Five Mile Road Continuous Flow Intersection Now Open
After years of planning and months of construction, the new Continuous Flow Intersection opened Friday, May 19, at the intersection of Five Mile Road and Beechmont Avenue.
With the traffic pattern change, drivers now follow new white lines and a different traffic signal configuration, highlighted by relocated travel and left turn lanes along Five Mile Road, and new right turn lanes from Ohio 125 (Beechmont Avenue) to Five Mile Road. Other upgrades in this project included pedestrian marked access in the intersection, which formerly did not exist.
According to Steve Sievers, administrator of operations who assisted the Ohio Department of Transportation and Hamilton County Engineer’s Office with this project, the initial changes have gone very well. ODOT, Anderson Township and Hamilton County officials continue to monitor the intersection for opportunities to enhance traffic flow and safety, he said. Some changes are planned, for more information these please click HERE.
Improving safety and traffic flow were major goals of the project from the onset of the planning nearly 10 years ago. This has consistently been one of the most accident-prone locations in Hamilton County, and officials hope that this will reduce both the number, and severity, of accidents, while also minimizing traffic congestion. Further, the CFI approach had the least impact on surrounding property owners, and studies predicted it to have the largest benefit with lowest cost of a variety of approaches that were considered.
Sievers asked motorists to continue to remain alert when approaching the intersection, reduce speed, and watch for confused or uncertain drivers who may be navigating the intersection for the first time.
“Thank you to all who have patiently waited for this project to reach completion, working through construction over the past year and the first few days of this new pattern,” Sievers said.
